Graduate Student Presentation Award
An award for the best presentation by a graduate student is to be awarded at the OAS Technical Meeting. A synopsis of this award is described below.
Nature of Award
The award will be made at the Annual Technical Meeting and will consist of
1. An appropriate certificate;
2. A monetary award;
3. Publication of the abstract of student’s talk in POAS, marked as the outstanding student presentation for the year;
4. One year’s membership in the Academy.
Eligibility for the Award
1. Student must be a member of OAS.
2. Student must have completed a bachelor’s degree and, at the time of the presentation, must not have completed the requirements for a Ph.D. (or equivalent) degree.
3. Student must submit a title and abstract to an appropriate section chair and the Award Committee by the deadline date set by the Academy for submission of titles (due October 17). The submission must identify the speaker as a candidate for graduate student award competition. The abstract must be approved by the student’s major advisor.
4. Student must register for and attend the meeting and present the work.
Judging for the Award
1. The President-Elect will establish and chair a Graduate Student Presentation Award Committee.
2. The Award Committee will design and produce a form similar to that used by the Oklahoma Junior Academy of Science to be used by judges. The form will include judging of the abstract, the oral presentation, the scientific content, and the ability of the student to respond to questions from the audience.
3. The Award Committee will review abstract submissions and, if necessary, select those whose presentations will be judged, notifying relevant section chairs of the selections.
4. The Award Committee will periodically review judging procedures.
5. Section chairs will be asked:
a. to encourage likely candidates in their sections to compete for this award;
b. to schedule these presentations early during the day of the annual technical meeting to facilitate announcement of a winner at the end of the annual banquet;
c. to solicit individuals to judge presentations by students competing for the award in their sections.
